- RoostDASH does not play media. It is a metadata and messaging layer. No video streaming. No downloads.
- Both parties must have RoostPlex installed, and a Plex account to message each other.
- Requires iOS 17 or later / Android 8.0 (API 26) or later.
The Basic app solves one issue and one issue alone: To connect Plex hosts with Plex users, a feature- sorely, and confusingly- missing from Plex. There are many ways to solve this without RoostDASH, but all of them are convoluted, and almost always require the host to ask the user to create a second account somewhere. Usually Discord.
To me, that is messy. Grandma Beryl just wants to watch her murder mysteries. She barely knows what Plex is! I have literally had a friend call Plex magic (that is how little a lot of people know about this kind of thing). So why make it harder?
It was important to me that the app understand the difference between a user and host, and subsequently hide the clunky, nerdy stuff the user doesn’t need to see. Clean and easy. User just opens the app and sends a request, and gets a notification when the host adds that request to the library. No more losing requests in a text because the user forgot how to log into some other app. This is the same login as their Plex.
Heads up: In the future, there will be a Pro version that integrates with all the biggies with an eye to helping with the automation the more elaborate setups contain.
RoostDASH knows which side of the Plex relationship you're on.
| User | Someone shared a library with you. Great. With RoostDASH you can quickly search and message the owner directly: request a title, report a problem, or just stay in touch. |
| Host | own a library. Receive incoming requests (and mark them complte), and make announcements to all users with one click. |
| Both | If you share your library and are also shared someone else's, both sides appear in the same app. |
Everything across all your shared servers, in one place.
| Libraries | Tap a server to browse its libraries. Tap a library to see all its titles, with a live A–Z index for quick scrubbing. Pull down to search within it. |
| Search | Search across all your shared servers at once. Results are grouped by server and show title, year, and content type. |
| Unread badges | Message badges appear on each server row so you never miss a request. |
| Customizable homepage | Set up the main page with only what you need and hide the rest |
Built for anyone with no extra account to set up (we're looking at you Discord). Just a straight line from user to host and back again.
| Announcements | A one-to-all channel. The host posts here; everyone on that server can read it. Good for outage notices, new additions, or anything the whole group should see. |
| Requests | Private 1-on-1 threads between the host and each user. Tap + in the composer to attach a title from TMDb — a media card with poster, title, year, and a direct link drops into the message. |
| Push notifications | New messages trigger a push notification whether the app is open or not. Control them per-channel in Settings. |
| Cross-platform | iOS and Android connect to the same backend — an iOS user and an Android user can message each other in real time. |
